Mr. Mam Sonando in the VOA Khmer studio (Washington DC, on May 27, 2013)
I. Mam Sonando's Biography
Mr. Mr. Mam Sonando is the founder and president of the Beehive Radio station (Sambok Khmum radio) FM105 MHz and Association Of Democrats. He was born in February 13, 1942, in a village called Kampong Siem which is located in the southeastern of Kampong Cham province, Cambodia. Growing up in a family of nine people from a small village in that province was very challenging. His father was a lawyer, Mam Soth, was born in Koh Sotin district, Kampong Cham province and his mother, Eam Ouch, was born in Battambang province. As a teenager, he was ready to take on the world and pursuit his dreams. Indeed, he loves his village and often sees his beautifully natural landscape as a form of art.

No matter how long or how far he had been gone away from his homeland, he has never been abandoning the imprint of his thought for his beloved village in Kampong Cham. As very determined young man, he figured out a way to getting himself to France, and became a professional photographer and filmmaker. Knowing that one day he would eventually return to his home village and capture the natural beauty of the landscape of his village that he has engraved in his mind to show to the world is very intriguing.

Arriving in France in 1964, he had only a small bag of clothes and 500 francs that he managed to save up from Cambodia. Knowing what he always wanted to do in his life was an easy part, but like every successful story, there are always some obstacles along the way. He originally planned for his arrival in France, just to look for and maintain a decent job, so that it would allow him to earn enough money to attend school at a later time. It was only to find out, shortly after his arrival to France, that it wasnt easy thing to do. During that time, Cambodia just regained independence from France. The king of Cambodia had signed an accord with France that did not allow French to operate a business or work in Cambodia and vice versa. With the documents had already been signed between Cambodia and France, he was not able to maintain his daily job that he had at the time. He had to work in fear, hiding from the government officials, and switching from one job to another, working long hours at a factory, or in the back of a restaurant --- washing dishes for less than a minimum wage pay.

On the other hand, he did not forget the main reason that he came to France. After saving up enough money from those low wage paying jobs, he then quickly enrolled in a technical school of photography and filmmaking in Paris. He attended that school for two years. Shortly after, he had fulfilled his dream of becoming a photographer and a filmmaker. During his enrollment in school, he developed a habit of not going out, wasting time with friends, while pursuing his education. Instead, he spent a great deal of time studying alone besides classroom hours. After attending a two years of technical school and graduated with a bachelors degree in sociology and cinematography/audio visuals, he did not want to get a job as a photographer right away. He wanted to go on with his education at the University of Paris.

During his absence from Cambodia, the country had been transforming from a monarchy to a type of democratic governments of which it is only to fool its citizens that Cambodia is now ruled by a true democratic government. This rogue government is abusing its power for their own interests and benefits for their families and cronies. It is similar to a type of communist governments that restricts the freedoms, liberties and rights of the majority of its citizens who are poor and often living in destitute conditions. Mr. Mam Sonando couldnt stand to see his fellow citizens sufferings and be oppressed by their own government. Therefore, he started to tour around Cambodia, and uses his new wealth to help the poor and lend a hand in any way possible to alleviate their sufferings.

After a few months of touring many small villages throughout Cambodia, he had a change of heart. He then realized his permanent role in this lifetime of what he shall accomplish. He was determined to change the way the poor people have been treated by the government officials in Cambodia. He has helped them to understand their rights and power as citizens of Cambodia under the constitution, to hold the government officials accountable for their actions, so that they would be free from being oppressed, poverty and sufferings and so on. They would no longer live in fears and humiliation. Mr. Mam Sonando would be the voice of the oppressed and marginalized people, for the change to the true democratic government in Cambodia.

Therefore, he knew the only quickest and easiest way to reach the people of Cambodia was through the live radio broadcasting services. Mr. Mam Sonando sold all his businesses to start the Sambok Khmum (Beehive) radio station in 1995 because he strongly believed that the people of Cambodia should have a voice that is not controlled by the government and can be heard throughout Cambodia and the rest of world through a radio internet broadcasting service www.sbk105.net .....

Currently, Mr. Mam Sonando Sambok Khmum (Beehive) radio station is lending his hands to help the disable hands of his people that were severely injured by the government, to fight for a new beginning. The people of Cambodia are tired of living in fears and sufferings that have been created by the hoodlums in government. We believe in the same principles as America has been built on which is guaranteed of personal liberties such as freedom of speech, the rights of free association, and a free press, and most importantly the equal treatment of all citizens in administering justice and application to the rule of laws. Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, said by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
